I have not been a fan of Disk Utility on Mac OS (excuse me, I don't mean to offend: macOS) since the "big change" in El Capitan. Everyone keeps telling that it is more "simplified" and more "intuitive". That sounds like Apple fandom brainwashing to me. When I keep hearing this script it sounds as if the speaker is saying it for fear that if they don't praise the modern Disk Utility endlessly someone will beat them up. I call it "Apple Stockholm Syndrome". People just seem to love everything Apple does regardless if it objectively sucks or not. Well, at the risk of being the unpopular kid at the lunch table, I don't care for it. I think tangibly it is a lower quality product in comparison to older versions. I find it more cumbersome and difficult to work with. And I will, once again, showcase a simple task that the old Disk Utility does perfectly that the more modern one often fails at. I often resort to the command line more often than not with the modern Disk Utility. I don't think that is just "old man talk" either. I love new stuff! But change for the sake of change at the deficit of function is not progress, in my opinion (remember Windows Vista???). A particular situation that grinds my gears is handling unallocated space on a drive. This used to be so simple in previous versions of Mac OS X, as I demonstrate in this video with Mac OS X Tiger. For some reason I can't just slide my main drive partition over the free space anymore? Well, actually I can, it just doesn't work every time. I noticed this in El Capitan and made a video about it. Probably the most "infamous" WiBisode episode of all time! Getting the most hatred from all the commenters. I deserve criticism, I'll take the one on the chin, but as much as I tend to ramble on and on and on (ya, this description is getting a bit long) it is not absent to me it was an Apple related video that got that type of reaction. As a multiplatform fan myself, including Apple, I have noticed this specific need to tell others how much "I HATE YOU" comes from that camp. Anyway, on with the show, folks! Here is the sequel! Let's learn together and perhaps have a little bit of fun? And remember, this is supposed to be entertaining. So, if you find yourself getting upset to the point where you can't stand it anymore, just take a deep breath and scream at the top of your lungs "serenity now". One of the biggest changes High Sierra is bringing to the Mac is the replacement of HFS+, with Apple's new file system, APFS (Apple File System). In the current beta releases, High Sierra does not automatically convert your disk to APFS during installation. You must manually click a check box in the installer to have your disk converted. If you forget, or that check box isn't present, you can manually convert you disk at anytime, and this video will show you how. NOTE: My apologies for the audio. This video covers some disk usage discrepancies in macOS 10.13 High Sierra beta when using APFS.
In this video I first show the boot time of my system running on an OCZ Vertex 3 SSD APFS formatted and with TRIM enabled. As you can see the boot has a long pause at these "FIPSPOST_USER" stuff. The solution that always worked for me is to create a time machine backup and restore to disk. As you can see after the restoring that long pause is drastically reduced. The initial boot time is 45 seconds circa, after restoring is down to 22 seconds. TRIM is still enabled and disk is APFS. MACOS version 10.13.3

In this video, I'll show you how to format your SSD as APFS on a Mac. This is useful for storing your sample libraries, and so long as you don't want to use the drive on a Windows-based system. If your primary use (like me) is for storing samples, you definitely will want to format the SSD as soon as you get it out of the box. Note: This video assumes you've bought one of the many external SSD's that ship formatted as exFAT, which is *not* recommended for use with sample libraries. Avoid data loss if fail to convert HFS/HFS+ to APFS: 🤍 Mac user are most likely to have installed the latest OS update on the system, i.e., macOS High Sierra. And with macOS High Sierra, Apple introduced a new file system known as APFS (Apple File System), which replaced the old HFS system. However, this also means that Mac will no longer support HFS/HFS+. If you want to operate your MacBook on a regular basis without such interruption, you need to convert HFS to APFS. So, in this video, we will introduce how to convert HFS/HFS+ to APFS without losing data. To do so, tap on the “Apple” menu in the toolbar. Select “Restart” and simultaneously press “R” on your keyboard. Step 2 - The Apple logo will appear on the screen and the system will automatically restart into the “Recovery” mode. Step 3 - Launch Disk Utility app on Mac and select the drive that you want to convert to APFS. If you want to convert an external hard drive, make sure that it’s firmly connected to the MacBook. Step 4 - Right-click the drive and tap on the “Convert to APFS” option. Alternatively, you can also find this option under the “Edit” menu. Step 5 - This will initiate the conversion process. Grab a cup of coffee as this could take a while. Also, make sure to not interrupt or cancel the process midway as this can damage the entire drive. Step 6 - Once the drive is successfully converted, simply restart your MacBook normally. You can confirm that the drive has been successfully converted by opening the “Get Info” option of the drive. Method 2: Upgrade Mac to High Sierra Step 1 - Visit the official macOS High Sierra download page and download the setup on your system. Step 2 - Once the setup is successfully downloaded, launch it, and follow the instruction to install the newer OS version. When prompted, make sure to check the “Upgrade Macbook to APFS”. This will automatically convert all the drives from HFS/HFS+ to APFS. While this is a convenient method to convert HFS+ to APFS, it wouldn’t help you convert external hard drives. So, if you’re planning to convert an external SSD or HDD’s file system to APFS, it is better to use the Disk Utility program to do the job. Bonus: How to Avoid Data Loss If Fail to Convert HFS/HFS+ to APFS It might cause some unexpected results leading to data loss in your Mac when convert HFS to APFS. To avoid this, you can take the assistance of Recoverit Data Recovery tool for macOS by following the 3 simples to recover your lost data on Mac. Step 1: After installation, select the location where your files got lost and then click "Start" to initiate the recovery process. Step 2: It will have your selected location scanned all around to search for your lost files. Some time will be required to finish the process. Step 3: After the scan, you can preview the data files that are found. Simply select the files that you wish to retrieve and click on the “Recover” button to get them back. -Step Guide- 1. Launch Disk Utility (located in the rocket app launcher or can be typed in and searched on the top right magnifier) 2. Select the drive you are trying to partition and remember the capacity storage amount that it has. 3. Lunch the terminal application 4. In the terminal enter: diskutil list 5. Look for the disk storage drive that matches the same information as the one shown in the Disk Utility app that you are trying to partition 6. Once found, follow whats on the same row and look for Apple_APFS Container. Remember the disk name under the identifier. 7. nope Tried again using the Disk Utility - this time while fully booted with High Sierra from a good SSD which has High Sierra installed with APFS underneath. Had to force quit APFS while trying to do a RAID 0 with APFS
