Do you love the simplicity and ease of pushing your application to Cloud Foundry but want to know what happens to your app instances under the hood? Do you operate a Cloud Foundry deployment and need to understand how all its different components work together to keep applications running? After years of development, Diego has now replaced the previous DEA system as the official container runtime at the heart of Cloud Foundry, capable of running even the largest CF deployments. In this talk, the project lead for the Diego team will survey how the Diego components interact with each other and with the other subsystems inside of CF to run application instances, how those interactions have changed over the past year to improve system stability, security, and scale, and how to use tooling such as the CF Diego Operator Toolkit ("cfdot") to inspect the app instances and tasks in a deployment. This talk will also review how Diego enables powerful platform features such as container networking and volume plugins, and discuss other upcoming features that CF teams are actively working on and exploring today. After attending this talk, you'll be ready to operate your Diego-backed CF deployment with confidence and to take advantage of the powerful features it unlocks for your applications. Eric Malm Pivotal Software Eric works at Pivotal Software as the Product Manager for the CF Runtime Diego team, and prior to that was a software engineer on the Diego team and on the CF Runtime team. He also holds a Ph.D. in Mathematics from Stanford University.

This week, VMware introduced a major new PaaS called Cloud Foundry. The project is available as open source software, and it provides a platform for building, deploying and running cloud apps. "The value proposition for Cloud Foundry is it's the first real open PaaS, or platform as a service," explains Tod Nielsen, Co-President of the Application Platform Group at VMware. "And by open we mean we're going to support multiple frameworks—be it Ruby, Java, Node.js—we're going to support a whole set of services as well as any cloud. By any cloud, we're actually going to offer to host a service ourselves, we're going to work with folks like Rackspace and allow you to offer Cloud Foundry as a service that you'll provide, and there'll be a behind the firewall version that enterprises can run in their private cloud. Then we have something we call the Micro Cloud, which instantiates Cloud Foundry onto your lap top so developers can write code themselves, and then they can push to whichever cloud option they choose." Because the project is open source, it does not restrict developer choices of frameworks, application infrastructure services and deployment clouds. "The challenge with the cloud today..." says Nielsen, "is it feels like the Hotel California—you get into one cloud and then you get trapped and you can't get out. If the industry is really going to let this paradigm take it to the next level, it's got to be open. It's got to provide the flexibility and freedom for developers and corporations to deploy where they want and when they want and move things around as necessary." Cloud Foundry aims to allow developers to remove the cost and complexity of configuring infrastructure and runtime environments for their applications and focus on the application logic. "One of the things that developers complain about today," explains Nielsen, "is if they're in a corporation, to actually get an application deployed requires all kinds of work to provision a server, provision a database, provision middleware, make sure it's all set up, coordinate with the operations team and write IT tickets. We had one developer say, 'it's like I spend all my time writing IT tickets'. The value proposition for Cloud Foundry is we want to help you write code, not tickets." Why Do I Need Kubernetes When I Already Have Cloud Foundry? - Sanjay Patil, SAP Like many of you, several SAP teams have also been asking this question to themselves. While the answer is singular in some cases (either Cloud Foundry or Kubernetes), in many situations, there is room or rather a need for both these technologies. In this session, you will learn why several SAP teams have adopted Kubernetes / container model for developing comprehensive solutions (more than what a typical ‘cf push’ can handle) and deploying them on-premise and/or in the cloud. Some of these Kubernetes based solutions are also exposed as services in Cloud Foundry environment, whereby Cloud Foundry applications can consume them via the simple and familiar service binding paradigm. About Sanjay Patil Sanjay Patil is a Product Manager of SAP Cloud Platform, a certified Cloud Foundry PaaS solution. With his passion and decade-long experience with Open Standard technologies, Sanjay has been closely involved in creation and launch of the Cloud Foundry Foundation. He has delivered talks on Cloud Foundry topics at previous Cloud Foundry Summits as well as other conferences such as SAP TechEd.
