ABL (auto bed levelling) is a great solution for a warped bed, allowing perfect first layers on your 3D printer. If you don't dial in the probe to nozzle offset however, your ABL won't function as it should. In this beginner's guide, we go through how to calculate and input your probe X, Y and Z offset. ABL or auto bed levelling is a must for many Ender 3 owners because their beds have arrived warped. ABL will probe the print surface before each print and build a virtual mesh which alters the early layers to match the contours of the bed. The result should be a much better first layer and hopefully a better and more reliable print. This is part 1 of a head to head ABL shootout, with part 2 featuring the BLtouch. The EZABL from this video was supplied by Tim from TH3D to make this guide, and is the direct connect version. I chose it because I didn’t want to use another power point for the EZABL. The EZ-connect version is simpler to install than what I’ve shown here. You could get an XT60 splitter to take your power from there instead of touching the mainboard. This video assumes you have flashed a bootloader with my previous guide: 🤍 This install retains full SD card support for offline printing. UPDATE: To making setting Z offset easier I would recommend enabling babystep offset by uncommenting: #define BABYSTEP_OFFSET After you set it at the start of a print, simply store the settings in the EEPROM. If you are getting this kit, make sure you buy directly from TH3D, not another vendor who is trying to rip them off. When you use an ABL Probe, to create a mesh, your GCODE must be updated, in order for your printer, to actually USE that Mesh. There is no need to make a NEW mesh, every print. Make a mesh, save the mesh, and use it over and over, untill you find the need to make a new one. With this GCODE update, your printer, will load and use, the currently saved mesh, on your 3D printer. Auto bed levelling is immensely helpful for the majority of 3D printer owners. Previously I have favoured the BLtouch but it’s not necessarily the easiest option for a beginner. This TRU-LEV 600 ABL kit aims to meet that need. In making this guide, I found this kit lived up to expectations, being easy to install and very accurate. If you disagree with my label of affordable, this is my justification. To install a BLtouch on the Ender 3, you need an Arduino UNO or USBasp to burn the bootloader, the BLtouch probe and most often a pin27 board. These parts certainly add up in price. This kit contains everything needed to burn bootloader and fit the sensor in one package. A bootloader is a piece of software needed on your mainboard to easily update firmware over USB. The Ender 3 and 5 does not come with one by default. You only need to burn it once, and after doing so firmware can conveniently be updated via USB. The M48 repeatability test matched my practical results, with a series of prints giving a consistent first layer. This kit was provided free of charge for the purpose of making this guide. All opinions expressed are my own. Hey everyone! Today I want to show you my new bed leveling probe: The KlackEnder Probe! An adaptation of the Klicky/Quickdraw Probe for the Ender 3 and comparable Creality printers. The probe is compatible with all printers that use the X plate of the Ender 3. The cost of the probe is less than 5€, of which the switch is the most expensive part. The probe is compatible with Marlin and Klipper. Both firmwares work with the G29 command, the docking is done automatically by the printer, it couldn't be easier! Both firmwares add a KlackEnder menu to the display that can be used to dock and undock the Probe. The Bed-Mesh can be created via the custom menu, via the default formware settings or with G29. The definitive guide for fitting a BLtouch to an Ender 3! Full SD card support and no wires cut in this easy to follow step by step guide. ABL or auto bed levelling is a must for many Ender 3 owners because their beds have arrived warped. ABL will probe the print surface before each print and build a virtual mesh which alters the early layers to match the contours of the bed. The result should be a much better first layer and hopefully a better and more reliable print. This is part 2 of a head to head ABL shootout, part 1 previously featuring the EZABL. The BLtouch emulates a folding servo and microswitch and is popular because it works on any build surface without recalibration. Other guides ask you to remove SD card support to make Marlin fit on the 1284P microcontroller, but some after worthwhile time spent in the firmware I found a way to have everything except the boot screen enabled. Creality have released their own BLtouch auto bed levelling upgrade, so I thought I would purchase one to put it through its paces. Similar to when I tested the upgraded 1.1.4 mainboard, the hardware represents great value but the software and firmware is the weak link here. Fortunately, for every issue I faced, I have a solution in this step by step guide. Maybe one day 3D printer manufacturers will set up the firmware correctly so nothing needs fixing. I recommend this kit only if you then flash a newer, better configured version of Marlin (provided below). It's hard to buy all of the components cheaper elsewhere. Here I show how easy is start to print using the Free ABL published by stevohen in Thingiverse: 🤍
Did you just install a BLTouch (or other ABL) and now you’re printing in mid air? This video goes over how to find the proper z-offset value for your probe. Edit: A lot of people ask how to “go below 0mm Z.” My firmware (Vanilla Marlin 2.x) is set in configuration.g to allow me to go 5mm below zero. However, you can also Send M211 S0 via terminal (octoprint or pronterface) to unlimit axes. When you are done, just send M211 S1 to re-enable axes limits.
Fed up with the BLTOUCH constantly probing at the start of a print. Unified Firmware support storing your bed leveling mesh. What this means is that you only need to probe the bed initially and then you can store it so all that is needed in your starting code is G28 then M420 S1 to recall the mesh data from EEPROM.
In this video I explain what bed tramming is, how it helps your z axis get a good first layer. This video has been prompted by questions from viewers trying to understand how bed leveling works. Bed tramming and Bed leveling are in effect the same thing, but i feel bed tramming is my perfered way to think of it. In this video I explain not only how to tram your 3d printer, but I explain how it exactly works to help your print, through the z axis.
In this video I'm going to show you how to level or tram your bed, set a bed mesh and set your z height on a 3d printer with a bed probe. You may be surprised to hear that you still need to level or tram your bed when you bought a 3d printer with 'Automatic bed levelling'. Well unfortunately, this is very likely to be a little white lie that 3d printer manufacturers tell to make setting up the printer sound easier. What 3d printers with a bed probe can do is create what we call a mesh that enables the nozzle to follow any variations in the surface of your bed after you have aligned it. However, there is nothing automatic about this process, we have to initiate it and tell the printer what to do next. Today. I'm going to show you how to do all this. .............................................................................................................................................................. I think I fixed it!!!! Little back story, got my shine new S1 pro on primedays. My first 3d printer super excited put it together as is in a rush. Everything ran awesome. ABL was fantastic. For 2 kg spools of petg. Looking to do some improvements I got e3D x-nozzle. When I was putting it in I found the z and y was sloppy. (Remember that). So I thighented everthing down. Cleared the settings did a manual level. Followed by a ABL. This is when I wanted to throw it out the window and move on with my life. If I could get the first layer to laydown it would fail by the 3rd. For 2 weeks now nothing but failed leveling. Way high in the front, low in the back after ABL almost always. Nothing was working. Again worked awesome out of the box. Took the new nozzle back out update to the new laser/fdm firmware. Still broken. Was doing some thinking this morning. Thought what else did I change? Well tightening the cam wheels on all x, y and z. So I loosened all of them to where there was the slightest amount of slop and the wheels spin freely. Now I cleared the setting. Leveled by hand. Followed by the ABL. Checked it with a level print. Working prefect again. Boys make it loose and it might fix your too. Try and get back to me. I hope this is it. 2 prints in looking great!! 1. Loosen all Axis just to the point of a tiny bit sloppy. 2. Clear settings(factory reset) 3. Manual level with paper all four coners and 80c 4. Run ABL 5. Be happy with your printer again.
Using a $3 SN04 Auto Bed Leveling Sensor and a $4 Optocoupler board, I was able to setup ABL on my Creality Ender-3. I created a modified version of the latest Marlin 1.1.8 firmware, which sacrifices several unnecessary features such as SPEAKER, ADVANCED_PAUSE and EEPROM in exchange for BILINEAR bed leveling.
