In this tutorial I’ll be demonstrating how to crop a photo with Inkscape in 4 simple steps using the Bezier Pen and clipping masks. Learning how to crop a photo with Inkscape may be a bit redundant if you’re also a GIMP user. GIMP would be a more suitable tool for cropping photos, so be sure to check out my tutorials on doing so with GIMP if you’re interested. Photocollages are EXTREMELY nice to do in Inkscape, you just need to draw a shape of what you want to cut out and make it 100% white, no transparency. Then you select both the shape and t he image (an imported image, most likely PNG or JPG) and use Object/Clip/Set (don't use mask or else it will have an awkward outline). The best thing about this is: you can undo this like nothing! I completely stopped using GIMP for collages after I realized this technique exists! Too bad color correction is not as nice in Inkscape though. This requires me sometimes to use both rather than just Inkscape. If you have suggestions for other software on Linux, please let me know! This video shows how to use the Object / Clip / Set tools to crop an image to a specific dimension or shape. We use the example of a YouTube thumbnail that has a margin of whitespace on the outside of it due to a drop shadow effect. We use the rectangle tool to draw the shape to the exact width and height that we want and then crop the underlying image.
