Return, a brief, minimalistic critique of excessive thought and wisdom, a sort of anthem of Jeffers’ mystical materialism, and perhaps a pertinent self-critique and a stylistic departure, appeared in 1934. Also a great eulogy. The same year brought the abstract and declarative anthem Rock and Hawk. The sonnet begins powerfully against excessive thought and consciousness and then flows through the description of a kind of ritual that admits only direct contact with the world, unspoiled by the machinations of human consciousness. Thoughts are likened to mayflies that serve only to blind the hawks of our hearts. … a little too wise. Jeffers here sees limited value in wisdom, as in his 1944 poem Cassandra he saw “kindly wisdom” as an ironic euphemism for socially comfortable lies. The poet visualizes thought as a kind of blinding insect cloud. This is very much in line with the major theme of Jeffers’ poetry since Thurso’s Landing and Margrave, only expressed here as a concise, rhymed sonnet; the structure used, perhaps, to enforce a kind of simplicity. Sometimes it helps not to think too much, or even to possess too much “wisdom.” Sometimes it is better to live simply in a world of “things.” from Robinson Jeffers: Fire from Stone © 2016–2017 Kaweah 🤍 Poem text © 1934 Robinson Jeffers (renewed 1962) Jeffers Literary Properties Stanford University Press Reading © 2017 Kaweah
In this poem, Robinson Jeffers imagines the eventual demise of his trees and his house. Imagining a scene on Carmel Point long after his house and trees are gone, he sees gulls in flight with the waning moon, and thinks of ghosts. Not one to crave immortality, he foresees that his own ghost will be good and buried, deep in the stone. Well, hello. And welcome to this Planet. We call it Earth. Our world can be a bewildering place, especially if you’ve only just got here. Your head will be filled with questions, so let’s explore what makes our planet and how we live on it. From land and sky, to people and time, these notes can be your guide and start you on your journey. And you’ll figure lots of things out for yourself. Just remember to leave notes for everyone else… Some things about our planet are pretty complicated, but things can be simple, too: you’ve just got to be kind. Here We Are is a beautiful, heart-warming book from Oliver Jeffers. We’re glad you found it. “An optimistic snapshot of contemporary life, this heartfelt hug of a book ought to become a classic” The Guardian 🤍

The poet who found his voice while working the "sea-granite" of Carmel Point happens upon a granite monolith in the heart of the mountains of Big Sur. It is as though he has had a chance encounter with his muse. Robinson Jeffers experienced a creative spark in August 1936 when he joined his 19-year-old son Garth, friend Lloyd Tevis, and Lloyd's Irish setter on a hike up Ventana Creek, a tributary of the Big Sur River, in an attempt to summit Ventana Double Cone. Jeffers was 49 years old, and this was his first overnight hiking trip (with the possible exception of a relatively short hike up Pico Blanco two years earlier). They didn't achieve their objective (fun to visualize an Irish setter climbing the steep and rocky west face of Double Cone), but they managed to select a campsite that would inspire the poet for decades hence. Robinson Jeffers is generally misread as a wilderness poet. With a little inspection, one can see that Jeffers generally used nature as a backdrop for human tragedy. The canyon of Ventana Creek was probably the only wilderness experience that the poet ever had, and it left a profound impression upon him. Even then, Jeffers could not resist bringing humanity into the picture: ... The revived flame / Lighted my sleeping son’s face and his companion’s, ... Oh Lovely Rock (SP 529–30) is a fine example of Jeffers’ skill as a descriptive poet. He is often a poet of people, politics, sin, war, death, and God, but when he does describe inhuman phenomena and our human response thereto, he can do a remarkable job of it. The poem imparts a sense of the poet standing watch past midnight, but it is more likely he simply had trouble sleeping on gravel. It might not have helped that he didn't bring a bedroll. The title of the poem, Oh Lovely Rock, might seem rather trite, though there is a sense in which the title may be appropriate, in that it relates to rock’s “childlike loveliness.” The rock’s face appears aside the face of Jeffers’ son Garth and Garth’s friend in the poet’s mind. There is a intimate, personified presence in the rock, for this monolith hidden alone in the mountains is made of granite—the very rock that gave birth to the poet himself at Carmel Point years before. This is his muse. This great wall of stone might be seen by the poet as the very womb of the stone on which he’d been reborn. Second upload of this video. Fixed up the audio and video a bit. © 1948 Robinson Jeffers (renewed 1975) Jeffers Literary Properties Stanford University Press Reading © 2017 Kaweah Too many of Jeffers’ poems end in a tidy pronouncement that seems to betray a lack of confidence in the reader—or conversely, a lack of confidence in the poet. Dawn is not one of those poems. Like Apology for Bad Dreams, Dawn ends with a grand image. In the former case, the image was one of multifarious beauty. In the case of Dawn the ending is an eruption of grotesque cruelty. This is perhaps not a poem that one would want to take home to mother, but I find it beautiful — beautifully troubling. ( from Robinson Jeffers: Fire from Stone 🤍 ) Closing image: Dawn at the Alamo (1905), by Henry Arthur McArdle.
