Subscribe here: 🤍 Full Episodes: 🤍 | Fall Guy (2022) Anyone who's ever stepped on board a boat has likely considered, even if only briefly, what would happen if they fell off it. The terror of that thought though is usually washed away by knowing there'd be immediate help. A life ring would be thrown into the water, the boat would turn around, a rescue would happen. But what about if you're a lone sailor and you fall off your yacht in the middle of nowhere? A month ago it happened to John Deer in shark infested waters off Panama. And just how the Aussie adventurer survived the freak accident undoubtedly makes him the luckiest, unlucky bloke in the world. I departed Kona, Hawaii after spending 9 months licking my wounds, repairing Triteia and exploring the Hawaiian Islands. When I arrived in Cape Verde after a hectic passage from Lanzarote, I was feeling so emotionally drained and fatigued that I wasn't sure if I would continue my journey across the Atlantic solo, or in fact, at all. I had Sophie help me put together several options to either stop in Cape Verde and have the boat delivered by Professional Yacht deliveries, or have a couple friends fly down and join me on my leg to the Caribbean. But after spending some incredible times around the island, I felt like a new man and realized that my initial motivation for undertaking this passage hadn't changed and that I would be hugely disappointed if I did not finish what I had started. And so here I am today, about to finish what I started, and while I hope this time passage will be smoother, I am confident in my ability to meet whatever challenge I am faced with... Aging disgracefully, I buy a new fast, but terribly uncomfortable racing boat, that I will convert to a cruising sailing boat: a French-made Bongo 870 from 2009. I pitch my daughter's (Nathalie Laine) new book 'Alessia in Atlantis', and I become philosophically confused about name changes to boats.

This is not the start that Ryan expected to have when he left Lanzarote to cross the Atlantic solo onboard Polar Seal. And while we've always been aware of the migrant crisis between Africa and Europe, we never imagined that we would be confronted to it in such a brutal way.
