S.T.A.L.K.E.R. is a first-person-shooter survival horror video game series developed by GSC Game World. The series is set in an alternate version of the present-day Chornobyl Exclusion Zone in Ukraine, where, according to the series' backstory, a mysterious second Chornobyl disaster took place in 2006. As a result, the area's physical, chemical, and biological processes were altered, spawning numerous nature-defying anomalies, artifacts, and mutants. The player takes the role of a "stalker" - a name given to trespassers and adventurers who have come to explore the exclusion zone and its strange phenomena. The series is loosely based on the novel Roadside Picnic by Arkady and Boris Strugatsky, and influenced by the movie Stalker by Andrei Tarkovsky. The name "S.T.A.L.K.E.R." is a backronym for Scavengers, Trespassers, Adventurers, Loners, Killers, Explorers, and Robbers. G.A.M.M.A is a large community-driven project combining the work of many modders, and each and everyone one of them is contributing to making S.T.A.L.K.E.R Anomaly a better experience. G.A.M.M.A. aims at providing a balanced survival, scavenging, cooking, crafting, and repairing focused experience with extended progression and smooth gameplay. Spec Ops The Line is a 2012 third person shooter video game developed by the German studio Yager Development and published by 2K Games. The player controls Captain Martin Walker, who is sent into a post-catastrophe Dubai with an elite Delta Force team on a recon mission. As the game progresses, Walker begins to experience hallucinations and slowly realizes the horror of war. The game begins in medias res with Walker, Adams, and Lugo flying in a helicopter past the skyscrapers of Dubai, shooting down several pursuing helicopters until a sudden sandstorm forms, causing one of the pursuers to spin out of control and crash into the trio. The story then jumps back to the start, with Delta traversing the storm wall to the outskirts of a mostly buried Dubai, being taunted on broadcasts by the Radioman (Jake Busey), a DJ and former journalist speaking for the 33rd. After coming across refugees being rounded up by the 33rd and engaging in a firefight, Walker elects to disobey orders and find Konrad As a third-person shooter with an emphasis on squad-based tactics, players can issue commands to Sergeant Lugo and Lieutenant Adams, who accompany the player for most of the game. Environmental hazards like sandstorms occasionally occur, drastically reducing the player's vision and visibility. Sand becomes a key gameplay mechanic and players can manipulate it at scripted moments in the game, such as triggering a sand avalanche to bury enemies alive. The game is set in Dubai, which has been ravaged by sandstorms, a story set-up inspired by Davis' and Williams' personal experience with heat waves, hurricanes, and sandstorms in Louisiana and Lubbock, as well as a story about a Persian army that vanished in an Egyptian desert in a sandstorm. The two found that the chaotic forces behind sandstorms would help them to convey the message of how fragile humans are, as well as the harshness of war. The team believed that the location provided them with a "fantastic" real-world environment allowing them to produce great visuals. Using Dubai as a setting allowed the game's levels to have verticality and variety. In this Units of History episode we explore the vaunted story of the US Marine Raiders which emerged in WW2 to act as the tip of the spear for offensives against Japan in the Pacific War. We begin the episode with an overview of the state of the US Marine Corps following the Great War. It was in these years that the forces slowly came into play which would eventually birth the Marine Raiders. One major factor was the development of Amphibious Operations Doctrine which increasingly called for the use of special first wave units meant to soften enemy defenses prior to a landing. To this end, the Marine Corps would begin allocating time and resources towards this effort as war loomed on the horizon in the Pacific. Key to these efforts would be two commanders who ended up leading the First and Second Raider Battalions, namely Merritt Edson and Evans Carlson. We spend time familiarizing ourselves with the careers of both these men and how their particular personalities would end up shaping their units. Our history documentary then covers the equipment, training, and tactics of the Marine Raiders as the came into being in the months immediately after the attack on Pearl Harbor. We then cover the service history of the US Marine Raiders from the raid on Making Island to the Battle of Bloody ridge on Guadalcanal. In part 2 we will continue this story with the long raid and their continued operations through 1943. Spec Ops: The Line is heavily influenced by a pre-existing classic novella titled “Heart of Darkness”, which is arguably the most analyzed piece of literature in history. I decided that what I would do is analyze Heart of Darkness and its two most popular adaptations: Apocalypse Now and, of course, Spec Ops: The Line. However, while I am analyzing the individual stories in each of the three cases, I am moreso analyzing the quote-unquote “Heart of Darkness” as a motif; as something that actually exists. In my opinion, the Heart of Darkness manifests in real life, as well as in these three forms of fiction... as a location, a thing to obtain, and a state of mind. Spec Ops: The Line is a 2012 third-person shooter video game developed by the German studio Yager Development and published by 2K Games. It was released internationally in June 2012 for Windows, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360. It is the tenth title, as well as a reboot, of the Spec Ops series. In the game, players can hide behind cover, vault over obstacles, and shoot enemies while utilizing a variety of gadgets. Included with the game is an online multiplayer mode, developed separately by Darkside Game Studios, allowing players to engage in both cooperative and competitive gameplay. The player controls Captain Martin Walker, who is sent into a post-catastrophe Dubai with an elite Delta Force team on a recon mission. As the story progresses, Walker's sanity begins to deteriorate as he begins to experience hallucinations and slowly realizes the horror of war. Yager started the game's development in 2007, taking inspiration for the setting and story framework from various media, including Joseph Conrad's 1899 novella Heart of Darkness and the 1979 film Apocalypse Now. The game was designed to be "physically opposing", causing players to question their thoughts about treating war in a video game as entertainment, and tasks players to make a variety of morally ambiguous decisions. The game suffered from multiple delays, and the development team used this time to refine the story and increase the gameplay's pace. The game's soundtrack is a mix of licensed music and original music composed by Elia Cmíral. The game was banned in the United Arab Emirates for its depiction of Dubai in a state of destruction. Spec Ops: The Line received generally positive reviews from critics with praise given for the narrative and its themes, while criticism was targeted at the online multiplayer and generic third-person gameplay. It was also awarded and nominated for several end-of-the-year accolades, particularly for its story, and has garnered a cult following in the years after its release. I have never played a game like Spec Ops: The Line & I never knew a game with a narrative as crazy as this even existed in video games. Given how Spec Ops: The Line came out in 2012 and it wasn't as massive as a success as other game's from that period I never thought Spec Ops: The Line would be as narratively engaging as it was.
