It sounds amazing… but if this is even true, it’s a good news story covering up a trend that has cost you dearly…There is a reason these delivery drivers are making six figures and you AREN’T. Last month the union representing three hundred and forty thousand [340,000] UPS employees including drivers threatened a major strike unless the company renegotiated contracts around pay, benefits and conditions. The company came to a compromise over all of these points. The union wanted air conditioning in all vehicles and the company compromised by offering air conditioning in all NEW vehicles. The union wanted clear language about drones and driverless vehicles that could take workers jobs. The company can still use these new technologies but now it needs to inform workers and the union before it does and most importantly, the union wanted a significant pay rise for workers which the company did agree to, but it will come into effect over the next five years. According to data from the US Census Bureau, wages for average Americans have been stagnant since the 1970’s and according to a Bankrate survey of two thousand five hundred [2,500] Americans people need a salary of two hundred and thirty-three thousand dollars [$233,000] a year to feel financially comfortable. That’s more than three times the median household income, which is $71,000 a year, but it is in line with the amount that the average household would be earning if wages kept up with productivity. If that did happen, the one hundred and seventy thousand dollars [$170,000] that UPS drivers negotiated would make then below average earners, like you would expect unskilled drivers to be, but instead their incredible earning power is making headlines. There are three reasons why UPS drivers are making this much money and three reasons why YOU are NOT. The first reason is that the earnings of UPS drivers have been exaggerated but not in the way you would expect. That might be a distinction without a difference but there is a reason you have been hearing so much about it. The union wants to broadcast this success because it is a great result for their members, and it can attract more people in the industry to join the union to negotiate for the same deal. UPS the company is also doing a lot of press around these negotiations because they know it is great publicity for their company when it’s getting harder to attract new workers in difficult blue-collar jobs like trucking. Most of the stories don’t mention that most UPS delivery drivers are not full time and won’t receive the same benefits. The strong earning potential of full-time drivers is the best tool the company has to keep it’s part time workforce happy with limited hours, limited benefits and limited pay because they are holding out for the hope that one day they can become a full time driver and make the money they kept hearing about. Even drivers that do make it to full time are going to work extremely hard for their money. To make the $170,000 package that is getting so much press a full time UPS driver needs to work an average of fifteen hours of overtime every week. Delivery drivers and truckers already work unusual hours so reports of these roles putting significant strain on family life and a healthy lifestyle are common. Now maybe YOU already work overtime in a stressful job and the only difference is that you are not getting paid any overtime for it. Once this is detected, the control is transfer over to the batteries, and via an inverter, the batteries DC voltage is converted into AC for the devices. In reality, it doesn’t have to be computers systems and equipment that are kept alive by UPS. It could be anything from a fish tank, to a foot massager! We aren’t just talking about plain power outages, lights off, TV off, everything, but we can sometimes get spikes in power where a sudden drop can assure our devices are momentarily powered off, or something known as a brown-out. The amount of time the UPS can sustain a system for can vary, but it allows the opportunity for the issue to be resolved, or at the very least, allows for the systems to be shut down in a controlled manner. Since a UPS is a system that uses batteries to power a system should the supply be compromised, we, of course, have batteries and a battery charger. Since the batteries use DC current and our incoming supply is AC current, we need to convert DC to AC using an inverter. A UPS provides second-level surge protection, but although it does provide some protection, it should usually be used alongside an adequate Surge Protection Device (SPD) to extend the life of the UPS as well as the attached equipment. Firstly, and the most common in smaller systems is the Standby or Offline UPS. The Standby UPS lays in wait for its time to spring into action, and once there is a power failure, it takes control. The Standby UPS tends to be the most cost-effective UPS available. Next up, we have the Line Interactive UPS. It is very similar to a Standby UPS but with the added ability to regulate voltage automatically. This means that it monitors the incoming supply and can help out if it detects that the voltage is a bit low, or a spike is causing it to go too high. It can add or subtract power in this way to make the output to our devices constant! This type of UPS is particularly useful for the brown-out situation we’ve already mentioned, or power spikes or surges. Now we have the Online Double Conversion UPS. This type of UPS is efficient as the primary source of power isn't the incoming supply, rather it is the battery power. So when we have a power outage, there is no transfer switch to close, meaning no time to switch that you can get with the other type of UPSs. When the incoming supply is ON, the batteries simply charge up. It is called a double-conversion because it converts the AC incoming supply to DC, and then the inverter converts it back to AC for the output. In general, it ensures a far higher degree of isolation of the load from the irregularities on the mains supply. These are the most common types of UPS available. Of course, there are other types that fit a particular form or function, but these tend to be for more specialist needs. = Missed our most recent videos? UPS workers are holding contract negotiations with the company, and are threatening to go on strike if their demands are not met. Workers are demanding better pay, more full-time work, better job security, an end to the two-tier “22.4” job classification, an end to excessive overtime, better protections against company harassment, the elimination of driver-facing cameras, and protection from hot weather. If a strike were to happen, it would have a significant impact as UPS workers move 6% of the US GDP in their trucks every day. The Teamsters General president Sean O'Brien you mentioned earlier has said that this strike could end up being much bigger than the union itself. Like what has changed sort of almost ideologically or in terms of the approach of not just the union but unionism broadly with this new regime? Yeah well, let me give a little context because Sean O'Brien was actually on the bargaining Committee in 2018 initially with the Hoffa leadership but he was actually fired off of the bargaining committee because he wanted to take a very militant approach. So Hoffa actually fired him. And I think that O'Brien's campaign and ultimately what his leadership is really pushing for now is a shift that's taking place I think more broadly in the labor movement where workers are fed up and want to go on the offensive. Hoffa's leadership I think was very okay, kind of just playing on the defensive. Giving concessions as long as he liked as long as he could remain in office and keep his job. But we're seeing not only in the teamsters like the election of O'Brien and this leadership which is representative of a rank and file who wants to fight. We were delivering packages delivering vaccines during the pandemic, right? Justin and I were both doing this you know as we're 350 000 other teamsters. And during this period you know like we were risking our safety while a lot of other people were just ordering things from home. and at the same time, inflation as we've seen in the last five years has increased at a rate that is higher than we've gotten raises. And so we've actually seen a decline in our purchasing power as workers at the same time that our conditions have gotten worse. Meanwhile, a company like UPS has seen historic profits of 13.9 billion dollars alone in the last year. And so there clearly is money to go around. It's just that the workers at UPS have seen a decline in working conditions. Decline in purchasing power. Whereas UPS is shelling out billions and billions of dollars in stock BuyBacks and dividends to shareholders. and so what O'Brien's leadership is really representing and showing not only to Teamsters but to workers across the whole country and you know hopefully the whole world is that we are just not okay with this wealth inequality anymore. We're not okay with these companies taking money off the backs of our hard labor especially coming out of the pandemic. And I think the movement that we're seeing in UAW as well with the election of Sean Fein which was supported by used which is a reform caucus that has I think learned a lot from TDU. We're seeing these reform movements emerge in other large unions like UAW. I believe there's a reform movement kind of emerging in UFCW as well. so in this time of intense wealth inequality, I think workers are just fed up and ready to take back what we deserve.

What does it take to deliver millions of packages and documents every day right in time? You need a Giant Hub: UPS Worldport in Louisville is a technological marvel. It is the largest automated package handling facility in the world, and the center point of UPS’s worldwide air network. More than 300 flights arrive and depart daily and the hub with its 250 kilometers conveyors has a troughput of 500.000 packages per hour. Roughly two million packages a day increasing to more than four million during the peak season. 10 pm. The night rush hour begins. When frontline supervisor Tyler Sawvell and his crew unload and load the aircrafts on the ground – guys like Terry Rigdon in the general operation center control every flight activity of the cargoplanes. The world’s leading logistics group UPS relys on their one airline. With its 244 aircrafts, UPS Airlines is one of the biggest worldwide. Terry Rigdon’s goal is to get every aircraft with its cargo to their right destination – on schedule. But in this night, bad weather causes a lot of trouble and delays for the whole crew at Worldport. Due to thunderstorms the whole area have been put on an operations ban for 30 minutes. That means the outbound crew are not alowed to work. They can not unload any airplane. So they can’t feed the hub. We are our regular Tech Guy Matt has been on Grand Jury Duty for an extended period. we'll allow the don't worry about that okay thank you, Matt. And so Matt Bradley will be just growing these guys a little bit as they go. But let's just start with what is TDU? because part of what this Camp strike ultimately could be about is two classifications that were developed after the 97 strikes against UPS. So Matt, why don't you start and tell us about what TDU is and also those two different classifications that exist? Yeah sure so TDU stands for Teamsters for a Democratic Union which is a rank-and-file caucus within the Teamsters Union that actually emerged in the 1970s essentially as an effort to fight against corruption that had existed in the union for a little bit of time. And it has continued as a powerful force in the union in terms of activating Rank and file members and maintaining a sense of rank-and-file leadership and organization within the union. and so the two classifications that you were referring to earlier the 22-4 position were actually created in the 2018 contract that we're currently under. and what that position is is the language which is very kind of vague to establish this combination driver position that technology is supposed to work half time inside the building as like a warehouse worker and then half time as a driver as a way to take overtime away from regular package car drivers. But in reality, what happened was these 22-4S Justin and I are both 22-4s that were just used in the same exact way in most of the country as regular package car drivers. Except our wages are lower than standard package car drivers and we have fewer protections against things like excessive overtime. And we can't have like request loads for an eight-hour day. so it's essentially just like a cheaper and more flexible driver. and the sad thing is that this position was undemocratically forced upon the Union by the old Hoffa regime. And so it's one of the issues that has emerged as a strike issue this time around. But also it's one of the issues that Sean O'Brien and the Teamsters United slate which was endorsed by Teamsters for Democratic Union. It's one of the issues eliminating this two-tier driver position that Teamsters United campaigned on a couple years ago when they were running for office.

As record-high temperatures continue across the nation, there's a new concern for UPS delivery drivers. In Arizona, a UPS driver struggled to make it onto the front porch of a house. He then collapses and lies down for a moment to recover. The UPS worker slowly gets back up and reaches for the doorbell before stumbling back to his non air-conditioned truck. UPS says the driver is fine, adding "our package delivery vehicles make frequent stops, making air conditioning ineffective."
